Tone/Mood of Harry Potter
Considering the length of the book, it is very difficult to place just one tone or mood. If I had to place one tone on this piece it would be triumph. Harry works hard to be triumphant and he finally gets there at the end.
If I had to place just one mood it would be either mystery or intensity. We as readers are left in the dark on a lot of things. In the beginning when we first learn about Harry being a wizard, we are in the dark about a lot of things. Also, because Harry's life is always in danger it leads there to be a lot of intense moments.
Tone/Mood By Chapters
Chapter 1 - The tone and mood of this chapter would be mystery. It starts off seemingly normal, but then more and more things are out of the ordinary. Things such as a cat reading a map leave us wondering what this could be.
Chapters 2-3 - The tone and mood are once again similar. I would say they are frustration. The Dursley's are neglecting Harry, and blaming him for things he can't control. It is hard not to feel frustrated that he is treated this way.
Chapters 4-6 - The tone and mood are different for once in these chapters. The mood shifts back to mystery. We are left in the dark about a lot of things, and we are trying to figure things out in the wizarding world. The tone is excitement. Harry is learning he is destined to do more with his life, and he becomes over-joyed when he learns he can leave the Dursley's to be at Hogwarts.
Chapters 7-8 - The tone and mood are astonished. Harry arrives at Hogwarts and we become amazed by the giant castle, and the cool classes that Harry and his friends get to experience.
Chapters 9-11 - The tone is triumph. In these three chapters alone Harry triumphs over lifetimes of achievements. He triumphs by learning to fly, joining the quidditch team, fighting a giant troll, and overcoming a curse to win a quidditch match. The mood of these chapters is intensity. While Harry is triumphing, we are hoping he can do it, with each event more and more intense.
Chapters 12-14 - The tone is intensity. Harry, Ron, and Hermione have to find out about this trapdoor before it is too late! The mood is mystery. As readers we are left wondering about Nicolus Fleming, and whether about this trapdoor.
Chapters 15-17 - The tone of these chapters is triumph. Harry overcomes all of the obstacles, and manages to triumph over Voldemort. Then his house wins the house cup. The mood is intensity. All of the challenges overcome by Harry become more and more intense. Just when you think he can't do it, he pulls it out. This intense mood keeps us at the edge of our seat.
